Schwarzrheindorf Double Church

Built in the middle of the 12th century, the double church of St. Maria and Clemens in the Bonn district of Schwarzrheindorf is one of the most important Romanesque churches in Germany, featuring high-quality architecture and extensive preserved wall and vault paintings.

In this interactive learning world, the interior of the monument can be explored in four different modes, making its architectural history, paintings, original furnishings, and contexts of use tangible.

Learning Content

• Historical Context: Explanation of historical contexts via individually controllable audio buttons distributed throughout the church space.
• Visual System: Individually controllable audio-visual explanations of the wall and vault paintings, with the option for closer inspection.
• Lines of Sight: Variable positioning of the main altar and highlighted viewpoints to test lines of sight, with schematic reconstruction of the choir screen and the gallery of the upper chapel.
• Liturgical Furnishings: Schematic reconstructions of the original altars selectable via the dedication inscription, display of the excavation plan, and schematic reconstructions of the choir screen, the font location, and the gallery of the upper chapel.

The learning world was developed according to the specifications of the Learning Scenario: Exploring the double chapel of Bonn-Schwarzrheindorf, which was created as part of the project Virtual Worlds in Teaching Archaeology (2024-2026).
